The reproductive cycle of the Transformers is a fascinating one, if not a little confusing. Save for rare exceptions like Airachnid and Arcee, the Transformer population has almost exclusively been male, at least mentally and in terms of personality. Given that Transformers have neither male nor female reproductive organs, Hasbro and Marvel Comics had to come up with the Creation Matrix to explain where babies on Cybertron come from.
Some may call the lack of female members in most Transformers' rosters a sexism issue, one most likely rooted in the belief held by toy executives in the '80s that Transformers were a toy for boys. But the lack of female representation also raises another question: how could the Transformers possibly reproduce any new members without reproductive organs? A perplexing question like that had once cycled through the mind of Bob Budiansky. As one of the writers for Marvel's original Transformers comic series who largely contributed to the names and mythos of the universe, Budiansky is essentially the godfather of the Transformers franchise. As such, he came up with a simple go-to explanation for one of the biggest questions posed in the Transformers universe: The Creation Matrix.
