Murder mystery maestro Rian Johnson gives his coveted stamp of approval to The Afterparty. The Apple TV+ series debuted on January 28 and has received praise for its blend of genres, the most dominant of which is murder mystery. Tiffany Haddish stars as Detective Danner, who’s investigating the murder of popstar Xavier (Dave Franco) on the night of his high school reunion. In addition to Haddish and Franco, the comedy boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Sam Richardson, Ilana Glazer, Zoë Chao, Ike Barinholtz, Ben Schwartz, Jamie Demetriou, John Early, and Tiya Sircar, as well as cameo appearances from Channing Tatum and Will Forte.
The Afterparty is cut from the same cloth as Knives Out, Rian Johnson’s hit whodunnit from 2019. With the eccentric Detective Benoit Blanc(Daniel Craig) at the center, audiences cast a suspicious eye at each member of the dysfunctional Thrombey family, any of whom could be responsible for the mysterious death of family patriarch Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). For its inventive red herrings and unsuspected twists and turns, Knives Out picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
