Free Guy 2 director Shawn Levy gives an update on the progress of the sequel with star Ryan Reynolds. Levy directed 2021's Free Guy, which featured Reynolds as an NPC (Non-Playable Character) in a video game who suddenly gains sentience and begins to affect the digital world he lives in. The film co-starred Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery, Channing Tatum, and Joe Keery, and was a massive hit for Disney, pulling in an impressive $331 million globally.

Both Levy and Reynolds have a number of projects in the works, both together and separate, and one of those is Free Guy 2. While talking to Collider about their upcoming collaborations together, both addressed the success of the film and where they're at in terms of a sequel, which sounds contingent on «cracking» the idea before cameras get rolling rather than rushing to get it made. «We loved Free Guy,» said Levy, continuing, «We were thrilled that Free Guy was as successful as it was, and particularly as an original movie at a time where few get made and even fewer are hits. So that was gratifying. And if we can crack that sequel, that's something that might be very fun to make together.» Levy notes that both he and Reynolds have had experiences in making sequels and understand how difficult it can be to make a worthy one, saying:
We had such a clear idea of the tone, the story, the details of Free Guy, and we both made a few sequels in our lives, and so we know how hard it is to make a worthy one. And when we feel confident that's the kind we'll make, then we'll make it.
