The Milestone Initiative, created in partnership with DC Comics, has announced its first class. The new Initiative, an outgrowth of the recently relaunched Milestone Media, is a mentorship program that will help discover and nurture creators from diverse backgrounds. DC issued a call for submissions at last year’s FanDome event, and after hundreds of applications, the publisher has unveiled the Milestone Initiative’s first class.
Milestone Media was founded in 1993, as an imprint of DC Comics; it was the brainchild of Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle. The imprint’s intentions were to foster diversity in American comics, so that they might better reflect the real world. In its original incarnation, Milestone Media gave a voice to Black creators, as well as creators from other underrepresented populations. Although the imprint was shuttered in the mid-90s, the characters continued to live on, such as Static, who would star in an award-winning cartoon in the early 2000’s. The line was revived last year, headed up Reginald Hudlin and Denys Cowan; new titles featuring Milestone stalwarts such as Icon and Static debuted this year to great acclaim, introducing these characters to a new generation. Not content to merely publish Black and other diverse creators, Milestone is now nurturing the next generation of talent through the Milestone Initiative.
