Despite relatively poor box office returns, and Ms. Marvel star isn’t too worried about how much money the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe film has made.
Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment, Vellani — who reprises her role as Kamala Khan in the new film — said that things like how much money a film makes aren’t in her control, so she doesn’t really see the need to focus on it.
“I don’t want to focus on something that’s not even in my control, because what’s the point? That’s for Bob Iger,” said Vellani. “[The box office] has nothing to do with me. I’m happy with the finished product, and the people that I care about enjoyed the film. It’s genuinely a good time watching this movie, and that’s all we can ask for with these films. It has superheroes, it take place in space, it’s not that deep, and it’s about teamwork and sisterhood. It’s a fun movie, and I’m just so happy that I can share it with people.”
As of this writing, The Marvels has grossed $161 million worldwide, making it one of the lowest-earning films in the history of Marvel Studios. 2019’s Captain Marvel, the first film in the franchise, earned $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, for comparison.
Despite the poor returns in the box office, the Marvel Cinematic Universe film did still make some history. Its $46.1 million opening was the best opening figure for a Black female director in history.
