The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Jane Lynch explains her character Sophie Lennon's comedy success. The American actor and comedian best known for playing Sue Sylvester in Glee joined the cast of the Amazon Prime Video series as a guest in season 1, only to play a more prominent role in seasons 2 & 3. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 premieres on February 18, with two episodes released weekly thereafter.
Introduced in the series as a successful but gimmicky comedian who projects lower-class relatability, Sophie Lennon is in actuality a wealthy aristocrat who hides her background from the public. Midge revealing this fact on stage starts a feud that initially gets her blacklisted from the major comedy clubs, and their bad blood lingers into seasons 2 & 3. Sophie's narrative takes a significant turn, however, when she gets Midge's agent Susie (Alex Borstein) to manage her, attempting to leave her persona behind and become a genuine stage actress.

In an interview with the Guardian, Lynch discusses her character's approach to comedy, and reveals why she believes it has found success within the world of the show. Noting that stand-up at this time was very much male-dominated, she says it was important for Sophie's material to appeal to men if she were ever going to break through, since they occupied the positions of power.
