Eternals director, Chloé Zhao, comments on the divisive reviews of her Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The Chinese-born filmmaker was chosen to helm an MCU film for her unique perspective of character as seen in her early works, such as the Lakota Sioux drama, Songs My Brother Taught Me, and her critically acclaimed cowboy picture, The Rider, which won the Art Cinema Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Her biggest achievement has been the 2020 darling, Nomandland, starring Frances McDormand, which won her both Best Picture and Best Director at the 93rd Academy Awards. With such previous acclaim for Zhao, it came as a surprise to many that her MCU entry was not as well received as her previous films.
Eternals follows a diverse set of heroes after they had separated following the defeat their arch-enemies, the Deviants. When the evil creatures make a present-day return, the Eternals must reunite to fight for the planet's survival. The film's expansive cast includes Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, and Angelina Jolie. Averaging only a 48% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, Eternals was decidedly split with its reception. Critics generally found fault with the film's long runtime, conventional Marvel formula, and convoluted lore, but it was praised for its stunning visuals, diverse cast, and its ambitious nature.
