Pedro Pascal, who stars asDin Djarin inThe Mandalorian, reveals he had as strong a first reaction to Grogu as millions of others on the internet. The impact that Grogu, who was officially known as "The Child" (and unofficially as Baby Yoda) until The Mandalorian season 2 episode 13, had on popular culture cannot be overstated. From the point of his first appearance in the Star Wars tv series, he became a flashpoint of popular internet discussion and began popping up in a wide variety of memes.
His impact was immediate, and mostly due to the way The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau had kept his appearance a complete secret. Going off the advice of Donald Glover, Favreau went to great lengths to make sure that Grogu’s existence wasn’t known to anyone outside of the production staff until after the show premiered. In doing so, it is estimated that Disney lost over $2.5 million in potential merchandising revenue, although it can be imagined that this was absolutely worth the titanic impact the character had once The Mandalorian hit the small screen.

However, it seems that it wasn’t only the fans who reacted strongly on first meeting Grogu, as The Mandalorian star Pascal reveals in an interview with Vanity Fair. Pascal describes that, upon first heading to the studios where they would shoot The Mandalorian, he met with Favreau and his colleague Dave Filoni in a room covered with illustrations for season 1. It was there he spotted an “illustration of what clearly looked like a baby version of Yoda,” and upon seeing the drawing, Pascal says his heart “melted.” Read the full quote below:
