The 2022 Kia Niro electric vehicle builds on the heritage of previous models as a non-luxury electric SUV with class. Kia has been making all-electric versions of the Niro brand since 2020, with each yearly model offering some changes. The Niro EV competes with other all-electric SUVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the Volkswagen ID.4. The Niro nameplate has existed since 2016, with Kia offering hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and all-electric options. The Niro’s first generation was unveiled in 2016 as a PHEV with a design derived from the Hyundai Ioniq. Upon release, the SUV's size was placed between the Stonic and Sportage, two of Kia’s other models. The flagship Niro model was offered as either a PHEV or hybrid. The EV version of the Niro was first announced in 2018 at the International Electric Vehicle Expo held in Korea. In Asia and North America, the SUV was called Niro EV, while e-Niro was used in Europe. Recently, a new variant of the Niro, the Niro Plus, was launched in South Korea.
