Nintendo has yet to reveal sales figures for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but there’s no doubt that it’s a bonafide hit. It’s not only the biggest physical launch of 2023 in the UK but sold 2.7 times the amount of Breath of the Wild. The open world title also reportedly had a strong launch in France, selling about 500,00 physical copies in its first week.
This is according to freelance journalist Oscar Lemaire (who wrote for Le Monde and GK). He noted (translation via DeepL) it to be a “much better start” than Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and bigger than the launches of Red Dead Redemption 2 and FIFA 23. It includes sales of the Collector’s Edition.
It’s still “far behind” the record set by Grand Theft Auto 5, which sold 1.1 million copies. Lemaire also doubted it would be surpassed, given the de-emphasis on physical sales over the years. Once again, Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed sales numbers, so stay tuned for official figures in the coming days.
