Microsoft is all set to kill Internet Explorer browser next month after more than 25 years. For most people, their tryst with the internet was probably kick-started through the Internet Explorer. However, its death was clear from the moment its rivals supplanted it. The age-old web browser has long been replaced by strong competitors like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and even Microsoft Edge by the surfing public, but it is only now that Microsoft will actually kill Internet Explorer. The date for the deed is June 15th, 2022. The tech giant announced the same last year via one of its blog posts. Since, Microsoft Edge already has Internet Explorer mode (“IE mode”) built in, users can access Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge, said Sean Lyndersay, a Microsoft Edge program manager who wrote, “We are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge.” She added that the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10.
However, Internet Explorer 11 desktop applications on other Windows versions, including Windows 8.1, Windows 7 ESU, Windows SAC, or Windows 10 IoT LTSC will remain unchanged.
The death of Internet Explorer has been due for a long time. Microsoft had ended support for Internet Explorer 11 for the Microsoft Teams web app in 2020, and from Microsoft 365 services last year. Internet Explorer 11 support has already been dropped for Microsoft’s online services like Office 365, OneDrive, Outlook, and more on August 17, 2022.
