MJF has made it clear that he's unhappy with his contract situation in AEW, and the company's president and co-founder, Tony Kahn, says that he isn't surprised by that at all. The trouble really came to a head, at least publically, when MJF no-showed a scheduled fan event during Double Or Nothing weekend. At that juncture, news began to circulate that he'd scheduled a flight out of Las Vegas before his match with Wardlow, and fans weren't sure whether or not that bout would even go down.
That concern was so real that Goldberg's name began trending on Twitter as fans tried to come up with some possible last-minute replacements for MJF. That wasn't necessary, of course, as Friedman showed up to Double Or Nothing only to get dismantled by Wardlow. From a storyline standpoint, it was the right direction, but the whole match was overshadowed by MJF's actions outside of the ring over the weekend.

Khan has never been one to shy away from speaking frankly about AEW's inner workings, and while he's largely declined opportunities to comment on MJF over the last several days, he did speak about it a bit on The Corner Podcast on May 31st. When asked directly if he was caught off guard by Friedman's comments on his contract, Kahn said, "no, I’m not surprised, for a variety of reasons," before going on to state that "coming out of this [Double Or Nothing] weekend, as of now and everything he’s done in AEW, he’s been a huge part of the success of the company and he’s signed here for a long time. It’s 2022, and 2024 is a long way away." Kahn declined to comment on MJF's contract specifically.
