The Game Developers Conference is one of the industry’s most anticipated events, and 2023’s show (March 20 to 24) is the first post-pandemic year that it’s occurring again in the real world. Devs from all over congregate in San Francisco to show off their latest and greatest, and insiders know that GDC is where you go to get a sneak peek at the future of gaming, from innovative indies to big-name franchises. Here are ten titles that we can’t wait to get some time with at this year’s conference.
GSC Game World released S.T.A.L.K.E.R.—Shadow Of Chernobyl in 2007, and the Kyiv-based developer knocked out two sequels set in the irradiated Zone over the next two years. These games were huge hits, combining resource management, survival horror, and gunplay to create something truly unique. And then… silence. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was announced in 2010, but financial struggles caused GSC to shut down the next year. The team was eventually able to get back together and start development again, but it’s been a decade and a half. Nvidia has announced that it's going to host a new look at the game, which is set for release later this year.
Mike Bithell is one of the bigger success stories in indie games. He leveraged his quirky hit Thomas Was Alone into a little studio where he can incubate products by other designers. The first offering from his new label is The Banished Vault, a strategy game that puts you in command of a space-borne monastery that's fleeing from a mysterious galaxy-consuming event.
