At the very beginning of The War Within, players are dropped into a familiar location. While we don't know exactly what's going on yet, the area is easy to recognize...
The (New) Dalaran Crater
The very first quest on the War Within alpha begins with a bang: one big enough to create a whole new Dalaran Crater. According to the quest text, the last thing will remember will be Dalaran plummeting to the earth. We wake up surrounded by the ancient city's ruins, and we have to fight off hostile nerubians, who seem to have been involved in the city's fall.
<Your vision swims as you slowly regain consciousness. Distant shouts and screams echo in your ringing ears.
The last thing you remember is Dalaran, the great, floating city of magic, plummeting to the earth--then nothing but darkness.
Mixed in with sounds of shouting and battle, you hear a strange, insectoid chittering.
The nerubians were waiting for you.
You must rejoin the fight, but first you need to free yourself from the crushing weight of the rubble piled atop you.>

What's more, something awful also seems to have happened to Khadgar. There are no cinematics on the alpha, but a description of a cutscene reads,
Thrall, Jaina, Alleria, and Anduin gather in Dornogal to discuss the loss of their joint strike force.
They take a moment for Khadgar.
So What Happens?
In the new Wowcast about the War Within, Ion Hazzikostas hints a little further at the events of the War Within pre-patch, suggesting that the debris that surrounds us is the result of some sort of battle that didn't end too well for us.
There is an expansion intro experience that is not currently being tested, it's something that has some cool narrative elements that we want players to all experience together later in the year when War Within launches.
