UK-based developer The Chinese Room have unveiled their latest game and it’s a return to the genre of first-person, narrative-led adventures. The same genre that garnered the studio the most acclaim and attention in the past, with games like 2012’s Dear Esther and 2015’s Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. Still Wakes the Deep — the developer’s first foray into this genre in more than eight years — is set on an off-shore oil rig off the coast of Scotland.
After an unknown entity boards the rig, players take the role of one of the rig’s day-to-day workers, following the rig’s complete cutting off of communication from the outside world. Attempting to survive and uncover the identity of what’s come aboard as a result. A follow-up to 2020’s Little Orpheus — which was eventually ported to other platforms in 2022, following its debut on Apple Arcade — Still Wakes the Deep sees The Chinese Room’s debut in utilizing Unreal Engine 5. Still Wakes the Deep releases early next year for PS5, Xbox Series X/S & PC.
