The Boys star Jack Quaid has revealed how a scene involving a copious amount of fake vomit helped him to develop a deeper bond with costar Karl Urban. Quaid plays Hughie Campbell on the Amazon Prime Video original series, a nebbish underachiever who finds himself embroiled in a world of psychotic superheroes and government conspiracies. Urban's Billy Butcher is usually the one dragging Hughie through his various misadventures, often begrudgingly for both parties.
Season 3 sees Butcher desperate to finish his crusade of ridding the world of superheroes. To aid him, he turns to a temporary version of Compound V, the chemical that gives normal humans superpowers. While it works and Butcher gains the powers he needs to kill the Supe Gunpowder, the drug's detox period the following day is a brutal one. In season 3, episode 3, «Barbary Coast,» Hughie finds Butcher as he's coming down from his latest Temp-V dose. In the middle of a heart-to-heart, Butcher loses his composure and vomits green liquid all over Hughie's face and into his mouth in a moment that was equally shocking and nauseating.

Quaid recently spoke to TV Line about the scene and how it surprisingly helped the actors to form an even closer bond. Both stars are very intimately familiar with fake blood at this point in The Boys' run and Quaid said fake vomit instead was a refreshing change of pace, remarking that it's much easier to clean. Still, the scene required Urban to spit the fake vomit directly into Quaid's open mouth, which would cause Quaid to spit it right back.
