The Bat-Family is usually known for being non-powered vigilantes, but Batman has recently welcomed a new magical teammate into his family: Zatanna. The two heroes have learned that a committed friendship can be a powerful weapon in the face of dark forces. Zatanna—a powerful magician often affiliated with Justice League Dark—has been friends with Batman for years, and the most recent issue of Batman: Urban Legends officially ups her status to family.
Batman and Zatanna have been depicted as allies and close friends for decades. This connection remains strong despite the large gap between their comic debuts: Batman first appeared in 1939 in the pages of Detective Comics #27 and Zatanna—the daughter of the magician Zatara, who in fact debuted alongside Superman in Action Comics #1—debuted in Hawkman #4 from 1964. In the events of more current comics, Bruce Wayne and Zatanna Zatara are childhood friends, with Bruce showing her the kind of trust he usually reserves for his closest allies.

In the recent storyline from Batman: Urban Legends, «Bound to Our Will» by Vita Ayala, Nikola Cizmesija, Hayden Sherman, Nick Filardi, and Steve Wands, that trust is put to the test as Batman and Zatanna (with an appearance from John Constantine) battle a dark force they accidentally awoke in their shared childhood. The story culminates in a victory for the heroes, and, more importantly, a recommitment to the lapsed friendship that was once the hallmark of their relationship.
