Teen Wolf star Colton Haynes almost wasn't cast in the show over a photoshoot for a gay men's magazine. Based on the 1985 film of the same name, the MTV television series Teen Wolf began in 2011 and ran for six seasons. Haynes played the role of Jackson Whittemore, a main character in Teen Wolf season 1 and 2, before departing the show. However, the actor would later reprise this role in several guest appearances during Teen Wolf's final season 6.
In May of 2016, Haynes publicly came out as gay. By that time, the actor had already left Teen Wolf — the role which launched him into stardom — and had been starring as Roy Harper, a.k.a. Arsenal, in the CW series Arrow.Since coming out, Haynes has been vocal about the struggles of being an openly gay actor in the entertainment industry. The Teen Wolf and Arrow star even previously admitted that, while he openly identified as gay while growing up, he began to hide his sexuality when he started his acting career, fearing he would lose job opportunities because of it.

In his new memoir, Miss Memory Lane (viaEW), Haynes reveals that he almost lost his iconic Teen Wolf role because of a photoshoot he did for the gay men's magazine XY. Before becoming an actor, Haynes was a model in his teenage years, and participated in the XY shoot in 2006. As he transitioned from modelling into acting, both Haynes and his team became worried about the XY photographs affecting his career, and would send cease-and-desist letters to anyone posting pictures from the photoshoot. Haynes says thatTeen Wolf showrunner, Jeff Davis, fought hard for him to be cast in the show, and credits Davis with landing him the role. In his memoir, Haynes writes that
