A new Pokémon trademark that updates Pikachu's design has many fans theorizing that Game Freak could announce a new spin-off game. Since its worldwide launch in 1998, the Pokémon franchise has never shied away from spin-off titles. In 2021 alone, the popular series saw the release of the team-based Nintendo MOBA Pokémon Unite. A new Pikachu trademark filed in June, however, has kicked the rumor mill into overdrive as to whether the Pokémon series could see another spin-off title release sooner than expected.
Following the launch of Pokémon Legends: Arceus in January, Game Freak surprised players around the world when it revealed that Gen 9 would release in November with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The new generation looks to be Game Freak's most ambitious region yet, as Gen 9 will feature a completely seamless open-world map and a story that can be completed in any order. However, a new trademark discovered in June has led some fans to speculate whether Game Freak is planning on announcing another game despite Gen 9 Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's release date only being a few months away.

Eagle-eyed Pokémon fan EybpUez spotted the June trademark and shared it on Twitter after it was posted by the automated trademark_bot Japan account. The 2022 filing by Game Freak appears to be based on a new 3D Pikachu model that appears to have never been seen before. Because the trademark also listed the Pikachu model under the game category, the new design update immediately had players speculating if the Electric Pokémon mascot was tied to a new game that hasn't actually been revealed yet.
