Writer and director James Gunn shares a throwback photo of The Suicide Squad’s cast on the destroyed Jotunheim set. Following his success with Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy franchise (and brief, misguided firing), Gunn made his first foray into Warner Bros’ DC Extended Universe with last year’s The Suicide Squad. Piggybacking off of David Ayer’s 2016 film, the quasi-sequel brings back Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, and Captain Boomerang while introducing a plethora of new characters to Amanda Waller’s Task Force X: including Blackguard, Javelin, Mongal, and Savant.
Unfortunately, those three characters never make it past the film’s title card—which leaves Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Ratcatcher 2 on Corto Maltese to destroy all traces of Project Starfish. This leads them to the former WWII base turned top-secret facility, Jotunheim, which houses Starro the Conqueror. It’s revealed the giant alien was brought to Earth by the U.S. government, who then used the island’s inhabitants as test subjects—Task Force X was sent to cover America’s tracks. Following some explosions, Peacemaker’s betrayal, the death of Rick Flag, and the supposed death of the former, Starro escapes Jotunheim and wreaks havoc on Corto Maltese. The Suicide Squad’s bombastic finale sees Polka-Dot Man stepped on by Starro, who “was happy...floating...staring at the stars.” The rest of Task Force X survives after saving the day.
