Anson Mount reveals that he has seen the first three episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and he is very happy so far. Mount portrays Christopher Pike, the second captain of the USS Enterprise, who made his debut in Star Trek: Discovery. The upcoming Paramount+ series details Pike's time as captain before the events of the original 1966 television series.
The predecessor to Captain James Kirk (William Shatner), Pike was originally framed as the main character ofStar Trek: The Original Series' unaired 1965 pilot, «The Cage,» portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter. When the pilot episode was rejected, Hunter withdrew from the series, and Pike was replaced by Kirk. Despite this, a scarred, older Pike portrayed by Sean Kenney was introduced into the series in «The Menagerie,» with flashbacks to Hunter's portrayal in the pilot being used as flashbacks for the story. Mount's Pike first appeared in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, where he temporarily assumed command of the USS Discovery, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises to explore more of Pike's career between "The Cage" and before receiving the injuries seen in «The Menagerie.» Ahead of the series launch on May 5th, 2022, Mount has praisedStrange New Worlds' opening episodes.
