Spock's (Leonard Nimoy) shocking mutiny in Star Trek: The Original Series can be given greater clarification in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The Vulcan literally risked the death penalty to bring Captain Christopher Pike (Sean Kenney) to Talos IV in theTOS two-part episode, «The Menagerie,» which utilized footage of Star Trek's original, unaired pilot, «The Cage.» Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will give even greater context to Spock's (Ethan Peck) relationship with Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his decision to mutiny to save his former commanding officer in TOS.
Star Trek: Discovery established Spock's adopted sister, Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), as Starfleet's first mutineer in 2256 but, in the Star Trek timeline, Spock possibly became Starfleet's second mutineer in 2267 when he purposely broke Starfleet General Order 7 to save Captain Pike, who was critically injured from exposure to delta radiation. Pike was disfigured and left unable to move, needing a mobile chair that only allowed him to blink one light to say «yes» and twice to say «no.» In «The Menagerie,» Spock was aided by the Talosians to execute a dangerous and illegal plan to steal the Starship Enterprise and transport Pike to Talos IV. When Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Commodore Jose Mendez (Malachi Throne) caught up to Spock, the Vulcan was put on trial until the Starfleet flag officers saw what actually happened to Pike on Talos IV in 2254, which was projected by the aliens' illusion-casting powers. In the end, Pike was mercifully allowed to live out his life on Talos IV while charges were dropped against Spock so he avoided the death penalty.
