James T. Kirk will appear in the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which will also have a Wrath of Khan connection, but Star Trek needs to move on from that dynamic. Originally played by actor Ricardo Montalban, Khan Noonien-Singh only appeared in one episode, “Space Seed,” and the feature film Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan. However, the villain and his rivalry with Kirk has cast a long shadow over Trek mythology.
Strange New Worlds is a prequel series that will follow the crew of the Enterprise prior to Kirk assuming command. Following on from Star Trek: Discovery season 2, it stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Rebecca Romjin as Number One. Strange New Worlds also stars Christina Chong as La’an Noonien-Singh, a relative of Khan. With Paul Wesley coming aboard as James T. Kirk in the second season, it appears that Strange New Worlds will once again revisit Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan.

Khan is Moriarty to Kirk’s Sherlock Holmes in the sense that everyone seems to think they feature in a lot more stories together than they actually do. Much like every iteration of Holmes must have its Moriarty, it seems that each Star Trek prequel must tackle the story of Khan Noonien-Singh as if it’s an integral, immutable part of the mythology. This isn’t exclusive to the Abrams movies or Strange New Worlds, however; elements from the Kirk and Khan story have recurred throughout Star Trek history. It’s surely time to investigate why the franchise is still so interested in the Kirk and Khan dynamic, one that Star Trek should move past.
