A freshly-discovered logo for Star Ocean: The Second Story R on the official Square Enix support site suggests that the publisher is working on a Star Ocean 2 Remaster or remake.
As reported by RPGSite.net, the Square Enix support website briefly featured a logo for Star Ocean: The Second Story R. This logo has since been removed, and the address now only directs to a placeholder banner. Luckily, the logo made its way to the web, and we've included it below for all to see.
For those in the unknown, the Second Story is the subtitle of Square Enix's second installment in the popular RPG series - Star Ocean 2 for the original PlayStation from 1999/2000 (1998 in Japan). Several years later, in 2008/2009, the game received an enhanced remaster for the PSP in the form of Star Ocean: Second Evolution. In Japan, this enhanced remaster later made its way to the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita. As correctly noticed by RPGSite, this logo mentions The Second Story R instead of Second Evolution R, which does suggest that we're looking at either a remaster or remake of the original PlayStation version.
While this isn't an official confirmation of a remaster/remake of Star Ocean 2, Square Enix released a remaster of the first Star Ocean for PS4 and Switch some years ago. Whether this rumored Star Ocean 2 remaster/remake will get the same treatment as the first Star Ocean remains to be seen.
We'll update you as soon as more information about a possible remaster (or remake now that Square Enix is rumored to be remaking various titles, including Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy X) comes in. For now, stay tuned.
