Square is working(Opens in a new window) with Apple to enable Tap to Pay on iPhone for its sellers so they can accept contactless payments using Square's Point of Sale app on compatible iPhones.
Apple introduced Tap to Pay in February, inviting developers to integrate the feature into their iOS apps. Stripe is the first payment platform to use the functionality, opening it up to Shopify sellers. AmEx, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa contactless cards also work with the new system.
"Bringing Tap to Pay on iPhone into the Square ecosystem ensures that new sellers will have another free option to get up and running," said David Talach, head of financial services at Square. "While providing businesses of any complexity with more flexibility to adapt their commerce experiences to evolving customer preferences and changing industry standards."
Tap to Pay transactions are encrypted and protected using Secure Element(Opens in a new window). The system works on any iPhone from the iPhone XS onward and accepts Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets through a simple tap on an iPhone.
Apple hasn't announced an official Tap to Pay launch date, though it was spotted in action at the Apple Park Visitor Center last month. We may hear more about it at next week's WWDC.
