Encanto shows the Madrigal family tree in the opening of the movie, and the image is much sadder than viewers realize. In the song «The Family Madrigal,» Mirabel (Stephanie Beatrix) introduces the entire Madrigal family and the gifts they possess; it is a way to introduce them to the audience as well as reveal her lack of a gift. The family tree represents the Madrigal family in more than just their relationships, and there are a few details to it that foreshadow the darker aspects of the Madrigals.
Family relationships play a huge role in Encanto, with Mirabel spending part of the film trying to mend her relationship with sister Isabela (Diane Guerrero) as Mirabel’s jealousy of her perfect sister had driven a wedge between them. Their house Casita, who might've known when it would die, starts to break as Mirabel realizes there are bigger problems in the family, such as Bruno (John Leguizamo) being ostracized and everyone’s individual relationships with Abuela Alma (Olga Merediz). Rebuilding and strengthening the family relationships requires the characters to be accepted as who they are. As they stop living up to unrealistic expectations, the family and Casita become stronger than ever.

The Madrigal family tree foreshadows this breakdown and underlines the saddest parts of Encanto: Bruno’s secret disappearance and Mirabel’s relationship with her sisters.
