Square Enix appears to have uploaded an image for an as-yet unannounced remake of Star Ocean: The Second Story.
As reported by RPG Site, a banner found on the Square Enix Support website appears to show a logo for a game called Star Ocean: The Second Story R.
While VGC won’t host the image, at the time of writing it can still be found stored on Square Enix’s own support site.
In 2019, a remake of the first Star Ocean was released for Switch and PS4 under the name Star Ocean: First Departure R.
A logo for Star Ocean: The Second Story R, then, certainly appears to suggest that a remake of the second game is in development.
Star Ocean: The Second Story was developed by tri-Ace and published in Japan by Enix in 1998 (the company didn’t merge with Square until 2003). Sony then released it in North America in 1999 and Europe in 2000.

The sequel lets players choose between Claude (a human character) or Rena (a Nedian, an alien race that looks similar to humans except they have pointy ears).
The story changes depending on which protagonist is chosen, and over the course of the game the party size can grow to eight members (though there are 12 recruitable characters in the game).
The game already received a remaster for the PSP in 2008 under the title Star Ocean: Second Evolution. This version featured newly animated cutscenes and a new soundtrack.
Given that this apparent remake reverts to The Second Story subtitle, it seems that Square Enix may be focusing on the original PS1 release as its source material.
