A behind-the-scenes clip from the set of Spider-Man: No Way Home shows Willem Dafoe scaring Tom Holland with his menacing performance. Since its release last December, No Way Home has become Sony’s high-grossing film and one of the most profitable movies of all time. This is thanks in large part to how the blockbuster capitalizes on Phase 4 of the MCU’s multiverse concept by bringing back beloved characters from the Spider-Man franchise’s past. These characters include a pair of familiar webslingers, Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and of course, Dafoe’s Norman Osborn/Green Goblin.
Dafoe first played the villain in Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man, which helped to shape contemporary comic book movies. Of all the villains to return in No Way Home, Dafoe's Goblin was arguably the most anticipated. The MCU film certainly positions him as the main antagonist, and Dafoe’s performance has proven a standout. In addition to the iconic Goblin cackle, Dafoe brought a surprising amount of physicality to the role as the actor requested he be allowed to perform his own stunts. Indeed, one Spider-Man: No Way Home's best action sequences comes in the form of a fight between Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Dafoe’s Green Goblin, which sees the destruction of almost an entire condo.
