Sony Interactive Entertainment has closed its $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie.
Bungie said(Opens in a new window) on Jan. 31 that being acquired by SIE would represent the start of its "journey to become a global multi-media entertainment company." This kind of deal isn't completed overnight, though, which is why it's taken nearly six months for the acquisition to close.
The acquisition isn't expected to change much for Bungie's flagship title, Destiny 2, with the company saying(Opens in a new window) in January that its sci-fi shooter would remain available on all platforms and that it "retains full creative independence for our games and our community" despite the deal.
So what does SIE gain from this acquisition? The company said(Opens in a new window) in January that it would have "access to Bungie’s world-class approach to live game services and technology expertise, furthering SIE’s vision to reach billions of players," regardless of what platform they're on.
This fits with SIE's broader strategy of supporting the development of PlayStation titles and then bringing them to other platforms later. (See: God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc.) Now it owns a company that skips the first step in favor of supporting multiple platforms from the start.
