Board games and video games go hand-in-hand for a lot of very obvious reasons. If you like playing one, then there's a very strong chance you'll like playing the other. That's why there tends to be a lot of crossover between the two worlds. Video games based on board games, and famous video game characters making the leap to your tabletop. Sonic will be doing a little of the latter in 2024 via Sonic Roll, a board game based on the original series of games created by Kess Entertainment.
Not much has been revealed about the mechanics of Sonic Roll, but the first images shared clearly demonstrate the board game has taken inspiration from the Sega Genesis era of Sonic games. The box itself even looks a little like a bulky Genesis case. Up to four players will be able to play at the same time, choosing between Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. The first four characters introduced to Sonic fans across those original four games.
Sonic Roll is a board game inspired by the original series of Sonic games on the Sega Genesis. Designed for one to four players who will each choose an iconic Sonic character, you'll work together to clear stages, defeat badniks, and take down Dr. Robotnik.
Players will work together to clear stages, battle badniks, and ultimately defeat Dr. Robotnik. How exactly you'll do that isn't clear but the images of the game revealed so far confirm that the Choas Emeralds will be involved somehow, and that Green Hill Zone will be one of the stages you need to clear. It really wouldn't be a Sonic game if that wasn't the case. Oh, wait, Sonic Superstars is a thing now. Never mind.
