Sonic Frontiers went down surprisingly well when it launched in November of last year. Despite some early gameplay footage concerning fans, it was met with incredibly high user scores, and more importantly for Sega, very positive sales figures. However, it turns out that the studio was still let down in one department: the Metacritic score.
In a Q&A with investors, Sega admits that the critical reception of Frontiers was "lower than we expected". This comes after the Metacritc scores have settled between a low of 61 on Xbox Series X, and a high of 75 on PC and PlayStation 4, suggesting Sega was expecting to at least reach a score of around 80.

"It’s true that the Metacritic Score was slightly lower than we expected," says Sega, responding to a question regarding Frontiers' quality (thanks, Tails Channel). "But the user’s score was very high. With that, we believe we have found a title that is widely accepted by a lot of people around the world."
Admittedly, reaching a score of 75 on two platforms isn't bad going for the Sonic series. Most of Sonic Forces' scores were in the high fifties, only getting as high as 62 on Xbox One. More recently, Sonic Colors: Ultimate was met with mixed reviews from both critics and fans, with negative user scores across most platforms. But with so many of these 3D Sonic game complaints addressed in time for Frontiers, it seems that Sega was hoping to be rewarded with more generous review scores.
In more positive news, the same Sega Q&A revealed that Sonic Frontiers' sales had "greatly exceeded" expectations. As a result, Sega says that the series will be "proceeding with a bigger budget" for the next game, even for the early stages
