A reboot of the classic horror film Sleepy Hollow is in the works at Paramount. The original story, based on Washington Irving’s 1820 novella entitled The Legend of Sleep Hollow, focuses on the titular town as it is haunted by visits from the so-called headless horseman. Numerous screen adaptations of the classic tale have been produced over the years, with Paramount’s first iteration debuting in 1999, directed by Gothic film veteran Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane.
Now, Deadline suggests that Paramount is looking to reboot its popular horror picture with Lindsey Beer at the helm. Sleepy Hollow will mark Beer’s second directorial outing, having already been attached to direct the studio’s upcoming prequel to Pet Sematary. As well as helming the project, Beer will also reportedly pen the script and serve as a producer alongside Todd Garner (The Possession of Hannah Grace) and Spencer Walken for Broken Road Productions.

Continuing her partnership with Paramount, Beer has previously established herself as a writer on productions such as the next Star Trek sequel, as well as showrunner on Netflix's upcoming series The Magic Order. Plot details for the new Sleepy Hollow adaptation are currently under wraps, though it can be assumed that the lucrative film IP will receive a comfortable budget to rival its 1999 predecessor’s $70 million. First brought to the big screen in the 1920s, other notable Sleepy Hollow adaptations include the 2013 Fox series which ran for four seasons.
