Warner Bros. has pushed back Shazam: Fury of the Gods a handful of days in an apparent attempt to avoid colliding with Avatar: The Way of Water. Originally set for release in June 2023, Shazam: Fury of the Gods was bumped up to December 2022 as the studio delayed Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash to next year. However, eyebrows were raised when Warner Bros. opted to open the upcoming DC film against none other than the long-awaited Avatar 2.
Shazam 2 will see the returns of Zachary Levi and Asher Angel, both of whom play young hero Billy Batson. When the teenage Billy (Asher) says the word «Shazam,» he turns into a super-powered adult (Levi). Shazam: Fury of the Gods' plot details are still being kept under wraps, but it will involve a pair of formidable godly villains: Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu). New footage for Shazam 2 screened earlier this week at CinemaCon, teasing Billy's latest adventure alongside his similarly-powered siblings.

With the hype for Avatar: The Way of Water skyrocketing in the past 24 hours following its own CinemaCon presentation, Warner Bros. has opted out of having a direct box office battle with the successful franchise. The studio has moved the release date of Shazam: Fury of the Gods back five days to December 21, 2022. This means the film will open on the Wednesday before the Christmas holiday. Shazam: Fury of the Gods now opens the same day as Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Director David F. Sandberg tweeted out a humorous response to the delay, making light of Shazam's near-brush with Avatar 2 by writing, "You're welcome Cameron!"
