Shazam: Fury of the Godsdirector David F. Sandberg reacts to the movie's latest release date change and jokes about facing Avatar 2. The DCEU film is the eagerly anticipated sequel to 2019's Shazam, which introduced young hero Billy Batson (Asher Angel) to the franchise. While the first movie found Billy adjusting to his newfound powers, Shazam 2 will see him and his foster siblings taking on new responsibilities as superheroes. Zachary Levi, as Billy's superpowered form, leads the cast; in addition to the returning Shazam family members, Fury of the Gods will add Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren to the franchise.
Like many studio films of recent years, Shazam 2 has been bounced around on the release calendar multiple times due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was initially scheduled to premiere in April of this year, but following a few adjustments, Shazam 2 appeared to settle on a date in June 2023. That held for a long time, but the DCEU surprised fans by reshuffling the schedule once again; Shazam 2 has now been bumped up by several months and will debut on December 16, 2022, a date once held by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (now moved to 2023).

Sandberg can always be counted on to respond to news pertaining his movies, and he reacted to Shazam 2's release date change on social media. He confirmed the December premiere and playfully joked about how his film is now releasing opposite the long-awaited Avatar 2. "Poor James Cameron must be shaking in his boots right now...." he wrote. Sandberg also commented on how it's funny that "Shazam 1 was a Christmas movie released in April and Shazam 2 is a summer movie getting released at Christmas."
