Shawn Levy was behind the camera for Marvel Studios‘ upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, and according to new reports, is the top choice to helm one of the MCU’s biggest future films.
According to a recent report from Deadline, Levy is the “top choice” to direct Avengers 5, the next big ensemble project from Marvel. The report mentions Levy has already been in conversations with the studio, and even received a script from Michael Waldron, who was recently tapped to write the screenplay for the movie.
Levy hasn’t decided on directing the movie yet, according to Deadline, and Marvel Studios will still meet with other directors while they wait. Deadline also describes the planned Avengers 5 as “more of an ensemble feature,” instead of a movie about “a handful of characters leading the team.”
Following Deadpool & Wolverine, Levy will also direct several episodes of the final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, and also has a rumored Star Wars film in the works at Disney.
The film was previously named Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, was but renamed to an as-of-yet official “Avengers 5” following the firing of Jonathan Majors last year. Production on the project was supposed to begin sometime this year prior to the firing, but now the status of the movie is up in the air.
Avengers 5’s release date is currently set for May 1, 2026. It was previously dated a year prior for May 2, 2025, but joined a lengthy list of Marvel delays as many movies saw rewrites and were impacted by the entertainment industry strikes that took place throughout 2023.
According to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige during a panel, both of the new Avengers films are currently planned to be the final entries in Phase 6 of the MCU, which will begin with the introduction of the Fantastic Four.
