Concept Artist Jerad S.Marantz has shared a terrifying alternate design for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Soul Eater minion creatures.Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings released in 2021, introducing audiences to Simu Liu's new hero. The film also starred Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, and Florian Munteanu.
In the movie, Wenwu, leader of the Ten Rings, hopes that breaking through the Dark Gate that resides near Ta Lo will allow him to reunite with Shang-Chi and Xialing's (Zhang) mother, Ying Li (Chen). Created to seal away the Dweller-in-Darkness and its Soul Eater minions, the gate is the only thing preventing the creatures from threatening the world. Despite Shang-Chi's pleas, Wenwu weakens the gate, allowing the Dweller to wreak havoc on Ta Lo. Inspired by Attack on Titan, the Dweller's escape and subsequent battle with the Great Protector Dragon saw Shang-Chi and Xialing have to use their skills against colossal foes. Now one of the film's concept artists has shared a closer look at an early creature design.

On his Instagram account, S.Marantz shared a creature exploration for the Soul Eaters that the artist described as a «demon.» The design differs greatly from the final design for the Soul Eaters, who appeared as tentacled, winged beasts that would restrain their prey with their tendrils before harvesting their souls. In S.Marantz's concept art, the Soul Eater is more animalistic, lacking the tendrils and instead walking on four legs. The creature also possesses a pronounced snout, with more vivid red areas on its body. Check out S.Marantz's art below.
