Fans of the franchise have been debating which game is in fact the worst entry in the Sonic series. While the discussion remains ongoing, some of the clearest contenders for this dubious title are the notoriously buggy Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. The former came out in 2006 and the latter was released in 2014.
The debate began when a user going by the name of JigglesBunny started a thread on Resetera titled “let’s (try to) settle this once and for all, what is THE worst Sonic game?” JigglesBunny pointed out that “we know there are plenty of valid candidates here” before listing off “Sonic Heroes, Sonic: Free Riders, Sonic Genesis for the Gameboy, Sonic Shuffle, Sonic Forces, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic: The Fighters, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic R, and Sonic Labyrinth.” The user noted that “frankly, there are too many valid options here to even bother with a poll.”

“In light of another shoddy (but functional) release with the Origins collection, I think we need to take a step back and properly assess just how low Sonic can go,” JigglesBunny asserted. “In your opinion, what is the worst of the worst and more importantly, why? Explain your reasoning and be ready to debate. As we all know, Sonic fans will find gold just about anywhere. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of disagreements.”
In spite of this belief, most players appear to be in agreement as to which entries in the series are the worst.
