First reported by the Korea IT News, Apple opted for the LG Innotek over an unnamed Chinese company to provide the components for its upcoming smartphone’s selfie cameras. The change in Apple’s front camera supply change management will also re-classify the front cameras from low-end to a high-end component, it revealed.
The iPhone 13 front camera was mainly supplied by Japan’s Sharp and a Chinese company and was looked at as a low-cost component. The LG Innotek cameras, which are more expensive, have largely been used for the rear-cameras in the previous year. Now, according to reports, Apple is set to increase its iPhone selfie camera budget for the iPhone 14 as it plans to add more advanced features like autofocus. The same source also claims that LG Innotek will benefit greatly from this deal as it has emerged as a key supplier for front cameras. The company is also internalizing some key optical parts like Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) parts, camera PCBs, and actuators.
