Guardian Spirits are a core mechanic of Nioh's combat system, granting you a Living Weapon that acts as a unique skill that packs a devastating punch. There are many Guardian Spirits spread across the base game of Nioh and its many expansions, all offering elemental buffs and powerful abilities.

There is thirty Guardian Spirits total in Nioh, and the vast majority are worth going out of your way to obtain. Whether you're trying to collect them all or put the finishing touches on your build, having a powerful Guardian Spirit on your side will make you a threat to most enemies.
Guardian Spirits that possess the fire element have the potential to apply the Scorch effect on enemies, which will set them ablaze and slowly lower their health until extinguished. Furthermore, in Nioh, the fire element is strong against water and weak against earth elementals, which can be a bit confusing to remember at first.
Kato is one of the first Guardian Spirits you will be introduced to in Nioh, but depending on your choice, they may not join you until later on in the game. You will have the option at the start of the game to choose Kato, Isonade, or Daiba-washi as your starting Guardian Spirit. Choosing Kato here will make them join you for the rest of your journey. However, picking one of the others as your starter will make Kato available in the Chugoku Region after clearing the sub-mission "The Three Angry Gods."
