FX’s has been criticized by the son of Jean McConville over the limited drama series’ “hurtful” and “horrendous” depiction of their mother’s execution.
Say Nothing was hugely criticized by viewers due to its “absolutely wild” tone since the trailer was made available to the public. Though the FX series is a hit for both viewers and audiences alike, with a favorable Rotten Tomatoes score, some couldn’t help but criticize the series — and that includes one of Jean’s 10 children, Michael McConville.
In a statement shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Michael stated that his mother’s death is not for “entertainment” — at least not for him and his family, calling out the FX series for its “cruel” depiction of their mother’s tragic demise.
“I just don’t think people realize how hurtful this is. The portrayal of the execution and secret burial of my mother is horrendous, and unless you have lived through it, you will never understand just how cruel it is,” said Michael.
According to THR, Michael has not watched the series and has no plans to do so.
Created by Josh Zetumer, Say Nothing is based on Patrick Radden Keefe’s acclaimed non-fiction book Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland. The synopsis reads as follows:
“Say Nothing is a gripping story of murder and memory in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. Spanning four decades, the series opens with the shocking disappearance of Jean McConville, a single mother of ten who was abducted from her home in 1972 and never seen alive again.”
Say Nothing stars Lola Petticrew as Dolours Price, Hazel Doupe as Marian Price, Anthony Boyle as Brendan Hughes, and Josh Finan as Gerry Adams. It is now available to stream on Hulu.
