Samsung is preparing to upgrade gaming laptops with what it calls the world’s first OLED screens capable of an extremely high 240Hz refresh rate.
On Tuesday, Samsung Display announced it had started mass production on the 240Hz OLED panels, which will appear in an upcoming laptop from MSI called the Raider GE67 HX(Opens in a new window).
The new panels promise to take mobile PC gaming to the next level. OLED panels are known for excelling at displaying high color contrasts and true blacks, resulting in stunning picture quality. However, the first wave of OLED panels for laptops were usually capped at a measly 60Hz refresh rate, making them less suitable for gaming, where high frame rates matter.
Now gamers won’t have to compromise on refresh rate. Samsung says the new OLED panels represent the first time the technology can hit a 240Hz refresh rate on a 15.6-inch laptop screen.
“Our new 240Hz refresh rate OLED meets and exceeds the demand of consumers who have long been waiting for a laptop with a high refresh rate OLED panel,” said Samsung Display executive Jeeho Baek in the announcement. “The clear advantages offered by high refresh rate OLED panels compared to LCDs will be a game changer for the gaming industry.”
MSI decided to adopt the panel, saying(Opens in a new window) “it balances high resolution and refresh rate, and delivers all the advantages of OLED, including super-low response time, super-wide color gamut, and super-high contrast ratio.”
The Raider GE67 HX is a 15.6-inch laptop that’ll boast a 1440p display resolution. There’s no word on pricing or an exact launch date, but it’ll probably be expensive. Buyers will be able to configure the laptop with up to a 12th Generation Intel Core i9-12900HX
