Movies purchased through the PlayStation Store in some territories won't be available to watch after Aug. 31.
As FlatpanelsHD reports(Opens in a new window), in a legal notice(Opens in a new window) posted on the PlayStation website for Germany and Austria, Sony explained:
"As of August 31, 2022, due to our evolving licensing agreements with content providers, you will no longer be able to view your previously purchased Studio Canal content and it will be removed from your video library.
We greatly appreciate your continued support.
Thank youPlayStation Store"
This means that anyone who spent money buying a digital license to watch a Studio Canal movie through Sony's store will lose access to it on Aug. 31. On top of that, it seems affected customers won't be offered a full, or even partial refund for the content being removed.
It's a decision that's sure to anger many PlayStation Store customers, especially when you consider over 300 Studio Canal movies were available to buy up until Sony stopped selling or renting movies last year. At the time, Sony reassured customers that all purchased content would remain available for on-demand access.
What we don't know yet is if the same legal notice is being prepared for other PlayStation Store territories. Regardless of how widespread this becomes, it acts as a reminder that consumers don't control access to the digital content they purchase and it can simply disappear regardless of statements made reassuring everyone it won't.
