Sakaguchi isn’t interested in revisiting Final Fantasy, Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon
Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi has said he’s not interested in working on the Square Enix series again, or in bringing classic Mistwalker games to new platforms.
The Square Enix veteran, who left the company over 20 years ago after working there for two decades, recently teamed up with the Japanese publisher again to bring mobile RPG Fantasian to consoles this year.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Sakaguchi said he’s not interested in working on Final Fantasy again, partly because he’s “switched to a consumer rather than a creator”.
“Now I almost live in Final Fantasy XIV,” he said, later adding: “If I take on the Final Fantasy brand again, I don’t know if I’ll be able to genuinely enjoy Final Fantasy XIV as much.”
Reiterating comments he made in a VGC interview in 2021, Sakaguchi also reportedly said he has no desire to remaster older Mistwalker games like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon.
However, he would like to revive mobile strategy game Terra Battle, which was released in 2014 but is no longer playable.
While the 61-year-old Sakaguchi once thought he might retire after making Fantasian, he told Bloomberg he’s working on “something new” with Mistwalker, which recently filed a trademark for ‘Fantasian Dark Edge’.
