Rockstar, Uber In "Close Coordination" With FBI, DOJ Following Attacks, Finger Microsoft, Nvidia Hacker Lapsus
The notorious group of hackers known as Lapsus could be responsible for the attack on Rockstar according to a recent statement by Uber. The collective is widely believed to have carried out the attacks earlier this year on Microsoft and Nvidia which resulted in substantial amounts of internal documentation being ransomed back to the companies in question. Uber seems to have become yet another target along with Rockstar this past weekend.
“We believe that this attacker or attackers are affiliated with a hacking group called Lapsus which has been increasingly active over the last year or so,” Uber explained. “This group typically uses similar techniques to target technology companies and in 2022 alone has breached Microsoft, Cisco, Samsung, Nvidia and Okta among others. There are also reports over the weekend that this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar.” The company went on to say that “we are in close coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.”

Rumors have been making the rounds to the effect that Lapsus perpetrated the recent attack on Rockstar. The source code for GTA 5 was put up for sale to the highest bidder and the source code for GTA 6 was apparently ransomed back to Rockstar, much in keeping with the methods typically employed by Lapsus. The leaker even went by the name TeapotUberHacker, a reference to the attack on Uber.
“It’s possible I could leak more data soon, GTA 5 and 6 source code and assets, GTA 6 testing build,” TeapotUberHacker said on the website where some of the content was dropped. “I am looking to negotiate a deal.”
