Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, is going after Alan Wake 2 developer Remedy. Take-Two is trying to stop Remedy from using its new logo, seeming to argue that it could be confused with Rockstar's own branding.
This was spotted by Respawn First, who noticed the trademark dispute on the website of the UK's Intellectual Property Office. Here, the filings for Remedy's new logo - which the studio started to use last year - show that Take-Two is disputing their use, and is opposing Remedy's trademark over the designs.
The opposing filing doesn't go into much detail on Take-Two's dispute, but given that the logo features a stylised R, it is safe to assume that the company is taking this action on Rockstar's behalf. Rockstar's logo also uses a stylised R, albeit one that looks very different from Remedy's, with a unique font, sitting atop a yellow background.
Still, even in cases where many would question the legitimacy of the concerns, Take-Two is known to be extremely litigious. It has previously come after mods for the Grand Theft Auto series, including an overhaul of GTA 4 and fan-made remasters of older GTA games. In the case of the latter, it seems that this was done to remove any unofficial competition to the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition, which remastered GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. Still, given that these fan projects are often made without financial incentive and require an official game to play anyway, it was a deeply unpopular move within the community.
As for its case against Remedy, we'll have to wait and see how far Take-Two wants to take it. Right now, it's still using this stylised R logo in its branding, as you can see on its Twitter account, so the studio appears to be contesting Take-Two's objection. It's been using it since April of last year, and that doesn't seem like it will change anytime soon.
Outside of this, it's been a good few months for Remedy. Alan Wake 2 has been a critical smash hit, scooping up positive reviews and
