While the Ewoks' vicious assault on the Imperial stormtroopers in Return of the Jedi quickly makes it known that they are not a race of life forms to be messed with in the Star Wars universe, it is never really made clear why they are so skilled in guerrilla warfare. However, one Star Wars Legends comic reveals the reason behind why the Ewoks are so unexpectedly deadly while also explaining another key aspect of their culture.
In the film Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, the Empire is in the process of constructing a new Death Star after the original one was destroyed by the Rebel Alliance in Episode IV. Part of the Empire’s mission is to ensure the current Death Star’s safety and the Imperial stormtroopers do so by establishing a shield generator on the surface of the nearby forest moon of Endor. However, once the Rebel Alliance discovers that the key to making the new Death Star vulnerable to attack is on Endor, they don’t waste any time getting there and befriending some of the indigenous life forms, Ewoks. Using the Rebels as a source of inspiration, the Ewoks come together and systematically decimate the Imperial forces, earning a victory for the Rebels.

In the Star Wars Tales #22 story titled “Marooned” by Lucas Marangon, fans are given a glimpse at the non-canonical story of a Stormtrooper who gets left behind on Endor after the Emperor is killed and the second Death Star is destroyed. In just a short few panels into the story, readers realize that this Stormtrooper isn’t alone and there is also a Rebel soldier stuck on the forest moon as well.
