Apple reportedly hopes that Hollywood will help convince people to buy its upcoming headset.
The New York Times reports(Opens in a new window) that Apple "has enlisted Hollywood directors such as Jon Favreau to develop video content for a headset that it is expected to ship next year." Favreau in particular was reportedly asked to bring the Apple TV+ series "Prehistoric Planet" to this new platform.
The report describes Apple's headset as looking "like a pair of sea goggles" that "aims to offer virtual- and augmented-reality experiences" when it debuts sometime next year.
This is the latest sign that Apple's headset will be more than just vaporware. The company also referenced something called realityOS in its code, and someone filed a trademark for that brand, which suggests that a product featuring a new operating system could become a reality. (Ha.)
So it would make sense for Apple to unveil something related to this realityOS platform at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which runs from June 6-10, even if the headset isn't actually ready to launch. The New York Times reports that is indeed the case.
"Apple plans to unveil software tools that would allow apps to add new camera and voice functionality" at WWDC, the Times says in the report, "laying the groundwork for a hands-free interface that customers will eventually be able to navigate on the headset."
Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
