Kevin Smith teases the release of the Clerks 3trailer with a promotional image that suggests audiences can expect older versions of Jay and Silent Bob. Set to be released this year, Clerks 3 is written and directed by Smith and will be distributed by Lionsgate Films. The film is the ninth entry in View Askewniverse and sees the return of the original Clerks cast, including actors Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson as the titular characters. Smith and Jason Mewes are also reprising their roles as the iconic duo of Jay and Silent Bob.
Talk of a third Clerks film dates back all the way to 2006, the year Clerks 2 released. The project lingered in development hell for a few years with cameras initially set to roll in 2015. However, production was delayed in favor of another View Askewniverse sequel, Mallrats 2,which was also placed on hold. A new Clerks 3 script went into development in 2019 and was completed in January 2021, with production beginning and wrapping in August of the same year. According to Smith, the new story will follow Dante Hicks and Randall Graves as they film a movie about their lives at the Quick Stop after Hicks survives a heart attack. While Jay and Silent Bob are set to return in the threequel, details about their roles in Clerks 3 have been scarce.
