Ever wondered what it’s like to be a 29-year-old overworked Korean man who’s never had a girlfriend? Boy, do I have the game for you!
Motesolo: No Girlfriend Since Birth was developed by Indicava Interactive, and as the name suggests, it follows the story of a man named Kimo Kang who’s about to turn 30 and wants to finally find a romantic partner. This is no easy feat, as he’s awkward, nervous, and unintentionally idiosyncratic. It arrives on November 30 on Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Motesolo was originally released in 2021, and it won the Indie Game Award at the Korea Game Awards. It currently sits with a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, but you should be aware of what you’re getting yourself into.
It is a movie game, meaning that the game plays out through live-action scenes. You do have some control, and the way the story pans out depends on your input. For instance, when you’re in a cafe waiting for your blind date, you can interact with many things, and even gain some items or information that’ll help you on your date. You’ll also have to pick dialog options that hopefully lead to a happy ending.
You can also interact with Kimo’s cellphone where you’re able to chat with his friends and watch videos that could potentially help you find romantic success. The story isn’t entirely about Kimo, however. You also get to learn about his blind date, Yumi, who is willing to give Kimo a chance, but she’ll have to deal with his occasionally cringe-inducing behavior.
It’s a funny, heartwarming game that is carried by the good performances and humorous plot. Give it a shot; you may be surprised at how good it is at putting a smile on your face.
