The new trailer for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet dropped today and revealed a slew of new details about the next major games in the Pokemon series. The trailer reveals even more of the games' still-unnamed region, and evidence continues to stack up that it is inspired by Spain. However, perhaps most exciting of all was the reveal after the trailer debuted that this will be Pokemon's first-ever truly open-world RPG.
“You’ll experience a world you’re free to explore at your leisure—not in an order dictated by the story,” a tweet published by Pokemon UK shortly after the trailer debut reads. That means you will be able to go anywhere you like, whenever you like in the new region without being tied to completing various parts of the game's story and earning certain badges.

Previous Pokemon games, from Red & Blue all the way up to Legends: Arceus, have required you to follow a series of events in order to open up new parts of the region, and thus catch new Pokemon. Beat Brock for the Boulder Badge, for example. Or defeat certain Noble Pokemon in each area throughout Hisui, as well as achieve a certain rank, before you can move on with the game's story and see more of what the new, or in Arceus's case old, region has to offer.
Even though Pokemon games effectively become open world once you have completed the story, as everywhere you've been then becomes free to explore so you can continue on your quest to complete your Pokedex, this is the first time that will be the case from the off. That will undoubtedly result in some very interesting tactics being used and lend itself to players having completely unique experiences from one another as they explore
